Social/Emotional Behavior: Lily is 8 years old, and her social behavior is non-existent. She refuses to participate in any group activity within the classroom and outside the classroom. When the teacher sits down with Lily one to one, she excels and is the most enthusiastic. However, the teacher can’t forget the other children in the classroom and can’t always sit down with her one on one. Her emotions overtake her when she feels overwhelmed according to her and she can’t control them when they arise. So, she will scream if they become overwhelming to her. This can scare the children and she just go out the classroom until she calms down with an administrator. Then she returns with the same behavior.
Physical behavior: Lily isn’t aggressive to anyone, but she can be physically violent to herself and be destructive to the classroom. She has not showed any aggression or been physically violent to anyone in the classroom. It is more of being physical violent to herself. She will hit herself hard all over her body. If she’s feels pressured to participate, she will become physically violent and will destruct the room. The teacher has been able to not let her destroy the room by removing items she can reach on counters and putting up shelf to areas that can be a hazard for everyone in the room. Almost like barriers.
In the end, the teacher is at a lost. She has spoken to the counselor and administration to help her, but her parents refuse help for her. The teacher has had observations so that administration can see her behavior firsthand. The teacher doesn’t feel guilty or overwhelmed but she does feel sorry for her because whatever is going on she isn’t getting help for it. She has done all she can do for her without neglecting my other students. She passes all assessments and will most likely go onto the next grade, but other developmental behaviors will follow her.
